This conference looked at the next major stage of Sláintecare implementation as the programme embarks on the next three years of reform and investment, with the discussion taking place in the context of the Sláintecare Implementation Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2023 as well as the publication of the Sláintecare mid-year Progress Report for 2021.

We are pleased to have been able to include keynote contributions from:

  • Seán Crowe TD, Chair, Committee on Health
  • Emma Dolan, Clinical Director, Pieta House
  • Professor Mairead Harding and Dr Úna McAuliffe, University College Cork
  • Professor Anthony O’Connor, Consultant Gastroenterologist, Tallaght University Hospital; and Clinical Associate Professor in Gastroenterology, Trinity College Dublin
  • Paul Reid, Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Health Service Executive (HSE)

Delegates discussed priorities and next steps for the reform programme, working towards the aim of delivering a universal health service which offers care at little to no cost - as the Government develops policy proposals for achieving universal eligibility.

The conference also looked at wider priorities for the health and social care system in the wake of COVID-19, such as tackling waiting lists - with the Government committing to implementing a Multi-annual Waiting List Reduction Plan - as well as improving patient safety and quality of care.

Further sessions focused on support for the health and social care workforce, including staff recruitment and retention, and improving health and wellbeing.

The conference also came in light of government commitments to roll out the Sláintecare Consultant Contract, which aims to remove private practice from public hospitals and hire 7,000 new community-based healthcare staff.

Overall, the agenda was structured to bring out latest thinking on:

  • the Sláintecare Implementation Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2023
  • priorities for health and social care in the wake of COVID-19
  • taking forward innovation and practices developed during the pandemic
  • shaping policy to make an impact on improving public health
  • the recruitment and retention of the workforce and priorities for support
  • key regulatory priorities for delivering safer and better care
